Indecisive buyers may agonize over the ten available colors that include Red Rock, Khaki Green and Melange Beige. Further indecision may arise when selecting either the well-optioned base model, or higher trim LS derivative. Either way, GM family membership entitles the owner to one of the best warranties in the business, 5 year 100,000km powertrain and 3 year 60,000km comprehensive, along with roadside assistance and courtesy transportation services.

Buying a GM product not only buys a car, but arguably the largest service network of any brand nationwide, totaling 803 GM dealers and retailers. Needless to say, a breakdown in the hinterland will not leave you stranded in the Bates Motel, awaiting the delivery of parts sent from abroad.

The Optra generates power via an Ultra Low Emissions rated 16-valve, DOHC, inline four-cylinder engine displacing 2.0 liters (122 cu in). Rated at 119 horsepower at 5400 rpm and 126 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm it is designed to burn regular octane juice. Given its compact size power should be adequate, although with five adults and a trunk full of gear highway passing may be dicey.

The base transmission is a 5-speed manual, however an optional 4-speed automatic is available. The Optra also gets 15-inch wheels surround by all-season radials, a sizable standard wheel and tire package for its compact category. They are suspended front and rear by independent MacPherson struts and coil springs respectively. GM claims "exceptionally composed ride quality and control." All four wheels are reined-in with the use of disc brakes and an available 4-channel anti-lock feature.

Passive safety has not been overlooked either, however only front airbags are available. It's unfortunate that GM did not go the extra step by installing side airbags and side curtain airbags, especially in a newly designed vehicle intended for family use. As a consumer, I would gladly pay the extra few bucks that it would have cost to design-in such a dramatic improvement in family safety. Fortunately all five seating positions include shoulder straps, while child seat tether latches are found in the rear.
