"The Ford Escape Hybrid significantly improves the power density of the hybrid drive system to meet the power demands of an SUV in available space," according to Ford Hybrid Technology Chief Engineer Prabhakar Patil. "You simply have to get more out of the same type of powertrain package that to this point has only been asked to propel a smaller car."

"Considerable attention also is paid to safety," adds Patil. "The battery pack, which forms the load floor at the rear of the vehicle, is designed to deflect downward in the event of a collision."

But while practical issues help keep the romance alive, it's styling that will turn the heads of discerning eyes and ultimately sell the car. The Escape Hybrid is attractively attired with 18-inch alloy wheels, stylized skid plates, an aggressive front fascia, a distinct silver honeycomb grille, and furthermore bejeweled with round fog lamps and unique quad headlamps. And for good measure it also features Ford's patented convertible roof rack, also available on the standard Escape.

To further woo environmentally conscious would-be buyers, the hybrid SUV's interior boasts floor mats made from natural woven fabric and ivory hued leather seats and trim, my personal favorite colour.
