Ford predicts it will achieve 6.7 to 5.9 L/100 km (35 - 40 mpg) in the city and about 7.8 L/100 km (30 mpg) on the highway - significantly better than the current V6 Escape's 13 L/100 km (18 mpg) combined rating. Meanwhile the new hybrid drivetrain is promising performance levels comparative to that same 3.0-L V6 equipped Escape.

What's more it has all of the same unique hybrid technologies as Toyota's HEV, including:

  • An engine that automatically stops and restarts instead of idling (contributing to a decrease in toxic emissions)
  • Regenerative braking (recovering energy typically lost as heat through braking friction, and storing it for the next acceleration)
  • Electric drive (in city driving, the gasoline engine may be off as much as 40 percent of the time)

Among the breakthrough technologies being trumpeted is the hybrid's battery pack technology, an advanced thermal management system that will result in longer battery life. The rearmost window on the left side is split to accommodate an air extractor that forms part of the vehicle's convection cooling system.

Other benefits include better acceleration performance when the vehicle is in pure electric mode and more efficient powertrain operation during highway driving.
