2004 Impreza TS Sedan

By careful packaging, Subaru Canada, Inc. has been able to drive up the number of models it offers to Canadians and that program will continue in mid-February with the addition of the sporty Impreza 2.5 TS Sedan.

Essentially, this is an enhanced sedan version of the 2.5 TS Wagon the Toronto-based importer brought out last year and it will carry a base MSRP of $22,995.

Norio Osakabe, chairman, president and CEO of Subaru Canada, says the company is doing this in response to customers who want the attributes of the 2.5 TS Wagon in a sedan body style with, of course, the safety and performance charms of all-wheel-drive.

''The Impreza 2.5 TS Sedan will be well equipped much like the wagon model,'' Osakabe says, ''with the addition of some unique sporty enhancements -- WRX-style 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels, 205/55R16 89V Bridgestone Potenza M+S all-season tires, and a wide-track sport suspension.''

This model is clearly trading on the buzz from the WRX STi, which is an awesomely agile and quick compact sedan and the most expensive car ever sold by the brand in Canada.

Like the Sport Wagon, the 2.5 TS Sedan will be powered by Subaru's 2.5-litre, SOHC,16-valve, horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engine that's good for 165 hp at 5,600 rpm and 166 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm.

Four-wheel disc brakes with a four-channel, four-sensor anti-lock system and Electronic Brake Force Distribution are standard in this model, as indeed they are in all Impreza models.

Standard equipment on the 2.5 TS Sedan includes air conditioning, cruise control, power windows, door locks (with an answering chirp) and heated exterior mirrors, intermittent rear window wiper/de-icer, a tilt adjust steering column, and an AM/FM sound system with CD player.

There is also a rear seat pass-through to the trunk for carrying long objects such as skis, as that is the kind of thing Subaru owners are supposed to do. Since Subaru also sponsors gardening in the U.S., the pass-through must also be used for rakes and shovels.

Osakabe also makes a point of mentioning the safety aspect of the new model, which he describes as ''exceptionally well equipped.'' Underneath is all is Subaru's Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame body structure that's meant to divert impact forces and resists intrusions into the cabin.
