Thesewindows add to the Discovery's unique interior ambience, rugged andpurpose-built, yet civilized and almost charming. Wood embellishes thedash trim, albeit just a single piece in front of the passenger's seat, while the doors are covered in a soft suede-like cloth. The seats arevery large and comfortable, with power adjustment controls tucked underthe center armrests, attached to the center console - awkward but theywork.

Headroom is atrium-like, front and rear, with those in the back enjoying the best executiopen of theater-style seating in the industry. Kids especially appreciate sitting up high, of course only when the chance to jump into the 3rd row seats isn't an option. The rearmost duo fold down easily, with headrests integrated into the roof, popping downward when needed - a smart idea. Also there's a hydraulic step to help rear passengers enter and exit through that massive rear door.

A leftover of its British heritage, the Discovery's rear door swings the wrong way when parked on a busy North America street. (Photo: Trevor Hofmann, Canadian Auto Press)
My only complaint with the rear door is its hinge placement. Having been created in England, where people drive on the opposite side of the road, the right sided hinges open the door optimally toward the sidewalk. Here in North America, the door opens onto the street, making loading and unloading unsafe and therefore near impossible if the cargo is something large and cumbersome. Land Rover isn't the only culprit mind you, as some Japanese models, also being designed in a country that drives in the 'wrong' lane, do the same thing.
