It's probably safe to say most people that purchase an RX aren't looking to take it off-road too often, but rather make the choice for its on pavement capabilities. An improved powertrain should increase the model's desirability even further, now putting out 230-hp at 5,600 rpm from its larger 3.3-L V6. Torque is even more important when trying to motivate a 1,844 kg (4,065 lb) machine up a steep grade, thus Lexus upped the ante with 242 lb-ft at a very tractable 3,600 rpm. The all-alloy engine features variable valve timing, acoustic control induction and electronic throttle control, for smoother power and a quicker response to input. The result is 7.8 seconds from 0 to 96.6 km/h (60 mph) and a fairly decent 1,587 kg (3,500 lb) towing capacity. What's more the ultra-low emissions rated (ULEV) engine achieves a combined city/highway fuel economy rating of 10.9 L/100 km (27 mpg).
Part of this fuel efficiency has to be attributed to its 5-speed automatic transmission, which optimizes more of the engine's power at the same time. The same gearbox, gated in its entry package, is available with a sequential-shifting manual mode in the Sport model. Both transmissions work well, with the latter offering more direct control of the SUV during performance maneuvers.
The $56,180 Sport also features a new adaptive front lighting system that swivels the outside headlights toward each turn improving visibility mid curve. Also included in the package are 18-inch chrome-plated alloy wheels and matching aluminum dash, door and console trim.
