What didn't change from Signum to Maxx were the proportions, so the body is relatively short on a very long wheelbase, which gives it that attitude I like and a very smooth ride.
Along with that look and ride, the long wheelbase also allowed Chevrolet to stretch the rear doors on Maxx and make them bigger than anything you'll find on a mid-size sedan, or most other vehicles. This makes getting in and out of the rear seat so easy it makes you realize how hard that action is on other vehicles.
This was of course the intent, says Ed Schoener, the marketing director for Malibu Maxx. ''When we considered what car buyers might want in the future and what this car can capture,'' he says, ''their choice in airplane travel was one thing we looked at.''
Schoener found that ''virtually all mid-size car buyers would like to fly first class, but nine out of 10 go coach. So, in designing and equipping the Malibu Maxx, we tried to go beyond what a sedan or wagon can offer.''
So along with the easy-entry rear doors, the rear seat slides nearly 178 mm fore and aft and is split 60/40 not just in the seat back, but also the seat cushion, to further increase comfort.
''The rear seat backs also recline, Schoener notes, ''allowing different-size rear passengers to tailor their seating position in a similar way front-seat passengers can.''
Rear seats that travel and recline separately are a real differentiator in this segment, and this one delivers about 100 mm more legroom when it's all the way back. Bonus.
Other rear seat amenities include a standard fixed glass skylight and a separate climate control system, the former delivering more light and the latter delivering more hot and cool.
