One of my turnoffs with the old Prius was its acceleration. The new system will improve 0 to 100 km/h performance from its current mid 12-second range to the mid 10s. It's no Subaru WRX STi, but compares well with other cars in this class, such as the Toyota Camry LE four-cylinder.

Toyota has attempted to create a smooth, sexy looking vehicle, but understated in a tasteful way. With its triangular mono-form shape, the new Prius is a dramatic visual departure from the original. The four-door lift-back shape contributes greatly to slippery aerodynamics, while achieving increased interior space and added functionality over the old car.

By-wire technology moves the traditional gearshift from it's normal location to a joystick "sprouting" out of the dash. (Photo: Toyota)

But the interior is different than expected. The traditional gearshift lever mounted on the floor or the steering column is located as a joystick "sprouting" out of the dash, just to the right of the steering wheel. This is achievable thanks to by-wire technology. The car's Smart Entry and Smart Start features allow keyless entry and keyless startup, not entirely new but perfectly suited to this technologically advanced car. How does it work? As the driver reaches for the door handle, an on-board sensor recognizes a key fob within close proximity - in a pocket or purse - and automatically unlocks the driver's door. Once "security-cleared" to enter the vehicle, there is no need to pull out the key to start up the car either. Instead only a push of the start button ignites the engine and its off to the races - metaphorically.
