H2 SUT's real trail-blazing activities will involve its ability to carry a combination of people and/or cargo, depending upon the position of the flexible wall between the rear seat and the full-time pickup bed, which GM calls the Midgate.

With the Midgate closed, explained Michael C. DiGiovanni, Hummer's general manager, the SUT can carry four passengers and 30 cubic feet of cargo. "When cargo requirements dictate the need for more space," he said, "the rear window can be powered into the Midgate, and the Midgate and the rear seat folded forward, offering a 4-foot by 6-foot pickup bed."

As is the way of such things, the Hummer H2's marketing director, Marc Hernandez, was even more enthusiastic about the SUT's capabilities than DiGiovanni was. He says it can be configured to give you a convertible feel.

"At the push of a single button," Hernandez pointed out, "the driver can lower the side and rear windows. Another switch opens the sunroof, which is a standard feature, and that gives SUT a truly open-air feeling, like driving a convertible." For sure there was a lot of opportunity for wind to rush in and sun or rain to bathe the interior, which is the essence of a convertible.

Not that you'd want rain bathing the interior of the H2 SUT; it's outside may be rough and ready, but its interior works the other side of the street.

It comes with Medium Wheat leather seats as standard equipment, for example, or you can pop for the uplevel Ebony leather interior. Either leather-seating configuration features eight-way driver's and front-passenger seats, four-way lumbar supports, and memory settings for two drivers.

Leather features prominently in the all-black upscale interior, including the instrument panel, the door trim grab handles, the armrests in the doors, the door trim surround and even the console lid.
