Seats are firm and comfortable. Side armrests featured in previous models have been dropped for '06. Rear seats flip down to provide extra cargo space.

Visibility is great, thanks to the large expanse of glass. Overhead, the sunroof lets in even more light, so the overall feeling of the cockpit is bright and airy.

Grey upholstery and dash materials compliment the silver paint on the test vehicle - with a body-colour enamel centre stack and glovebox adding an aftermarket look. Aforementioned glove box has a hand rail... you know, lest your grandmother becomes unseated by an over-enthusiastic getaway at the lights. Window switches have been moved from the bottom of the redesigned centre stack to the more easily-reached top.

Another nice touch is the matching enamel knob on the shifter. Touring and GT models have "bright accent" cupholders, a cool touch for those like me who are rarely without their java - and anything that makes it easier to grab wins points with me.

There's a new centre storage console with sliding armrest replacing the previous years' front passenger seat storage bin. Inside are a shallow tray and a deep storage bin with a power outlet for cell-phone, and in the back, a pull out cupholder for rear passengers.

Gauge pod and dash have lots of character and a flair that would please an aftermarket dress-up parts fan. Gauges present several different appearances; changing mood-ring-like depending on available light. Plain white with black numerals by day, twilight transforms them into an antique-looking nautical chronograph- all pinky backlit and funky outlined calligraphics. At night, the display is black with crisp white numerals. Adding to the vintage feel is a pretty analog clock that gets soft turquoise backlighting after dark.

Overall, the cockpit of the PT Cruiser is a most pleasant place to spend some time.

Disc brakes up front and drum behind are somewhat underpowered which was apparent when I almost became a small silver suppository to an abruptly stopped transport. And yet its similarly priced stablemate, the Dodge Caliber has really good stopping power. Go figure.
