Mazda-designed 2.3-liter inline-four, which produce 160 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque. The small four, which has seen great success in the up-level version of the Mazda3, belongs to the MZR modular family, and has great mid-range pickup delivered with a pleasantly raspy exhaust note. Paired to five-speed manual gearbox, or an optional five-speed automatic, the entry-level 6 is a formidable performer against the likes of the base-level Honda Accord, Mitsubishi Galant, Nissan Altima, and Toyota Camry, among others.

The other available engine is a robust and willing 3.0-liter V6, developed by Ford. Making 215-horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque, the V6 is down on power compared to its competitors which feature bigger displacement motors. To counter, Mazda offers two transmissions with the more powerful V6 model, a five-speed manual (something most of its competitors don't offer) and a six-speed Aisin-built automatic gearbox, which makes the 6 the only vehicle in its class to be available with a six-speed auto, at

least until the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan arrive on the scene. As such, this midsize offers effortless performance even under full load. That last point is ironic, considering that Aisin is a division of Toyota and the Camry and new Avalon only feature 5-speed automatic transmissions.

For those who find that the V6 isn't enough, Mazda will also offer the Mazdaspeed6 (6 MPS in other markets), which integrates a turbocharged and intercooled version of the 2.3-liter I-4, delivering a Legacy GT-challenging 274-horsepower. The system is further backed by all-wheel drive, and a sports-tuned suspension system.
