Used Mazdaspeed 3 a flexible, track-ready performer--just watch for upgrades
One of the ultimate hot-hatches in today’s market has just entered its second generation. The 2010 Mazdaspeed3 is now on sale— meaning the original 2007 to 2009 model has now transitioned fully into the used car marketplace.

The big draw to the original ‘Speed3’ was relatively simple. It offered the sensible operation of the standard Mazda 3 GT hatchback with a versatile five-door body, but added various track-validated performance upgrades and a great big turbo engine. The entire package was upgraded discreetly in the visual department, and offered only a few minor clues to the additional performance built in.

Remember these words: “Yea honey—I think we should get a five-door, too”. Those trying to sell their significant other on a sporty car should have minimal problems thanks to the Speed 3’s undeniably functional side. Sure—it’s got room for some child seats and gear as needed, but the Mazdaspeed3 is engineered to excel in the world of weekend motorsports, too. A used model could support a busy couple small family during the week, but it’s also more than happy to spend weekends on a track.

Shopping for a used Speed3 is relatively simple, since they only came one way. All models got racing-style seats, a six-speed manual gearbox, no sunroof, up-trimmed interior and a 2.3 litre turbo engine with 263 horsepower.

On a test-drive, you’ll want to pay extra-special attention to the condition of tires, brakes, suspension, the gearbox and the clutch. Note any tendency for grinding while gears are being shifted, and ‘feel’ for any signs that the clutch is slipping. The Speed3 has a demanding clutch and shifter setup, and it should feel relatively grabby and ‘tight’ in action. Any grinding or slipping could indicate excessive transmission wear or the need for a new clutch.

The Mazdaspeed3 you’re considering may have had a hard life, so it’s extra-important to remember that maintenance is integral to longevity. Unless you’re sure the former owner kept up on fluid changes and other regular maintenance, you may want to consider looking elsewhere. Scrutinizing a used performance car heavily can prevent potentially expensive headaches down the line, after all.

A technically-savvy driver or mechanic can quickly identify potentially damaged or worn-out suspension, brake and driveline components. If you’re not one of those mechanically-inclined drivers, a stop at your nearest Mazda dealer for a pre-purchase inspection is highly recommended.
