The 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander was a confident, reasonably priced alternative to more common all-wheel-drive machines, and one that catered to the needs of active families seeking reliable and safe transportation all year round. It was roomy, comfortable, well equipped and featured a very car-like ride and handling.

Despite its reasonable price, only a 2.4 litre engine was available, and with just 160 horsepower, there was plenty of metal to move. The four-speed automatic transmission was a little out of place, flanked by competitors offering five and six-speed gearboxes, and although very safe, the 2006 model lacked certain cutting edge safety features available from its ringmates.

Needless to say, an update was well in order, and it looks like they've outdone themselves this time. Based on a new global performance platform, the new Outlander features five or seven passenger seating, a 220 horsepower V6 engine, six-speed automatic transmission and available shift paddles mounted to the steering wheel, the latter being a segment first.

Front wheel drive is standard on each of the three trim levels, with optional all-wheel-drive consisting of an electronically controlled system featuring active skid and traction control. Handling and suspension are tuned for the application.

Safety concerns are addressed by occupant sensing front airbags, side airbags and energy absorbing head protecting interior pillars. All models include antilock brakes and brake force distribution- features that ensure drivers and their families have a safe trip to their destination. The versatile interior provides comfort and utility on the way. There is an under-floor storage compartment, bottle holders in each door and the rear gate even serves as a seat with a capacity of 440 lbs.
4WD equipped models can also tow 3500 pounds and feature an upgraded radiator and transmission cooler.

Outlander can be fitted with some high-tech entertainment features to compliment its advanced engine and chassis. There is an optional navigation system fitted with a 30 gigabyte music server, Bluetooth hands free compatibility for cellular phones, and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system. As always, Mitsubishi has ensured that audiophiles will be satisfied by the available stereo system, in this case a 650 watt Rockford Fosgate unit.

A wireless transponder key system is available and allows drivers to access the vehicle and start the engine by simply carrying the remote control in their pocket or bag.

Option packages include the Luxury Package, which includes xenon lighting, leather seats (heated front seats) and power adjustments for the drivers seat. A sun and sound package adds the premium stereo system, 6-CD changer, MP3 compatibility and an auxiliary input jack, as well as a sunroof.

Mitsubishi models are covered by a 10-year / 160,000 kilometre powertrain warranty with roadside assistance.
