The XL7 benefits from a unibody construction that's lighter and more rigid than the old body-on-frame architecture. Therefore, the new vehicle offers improved dynamics and handling, a comfortable suspension and a quiet ride, not to mention a better fuel economy than traditional SUVs.

Leaving the old 2.7-liter V6 behind, the XL7 is now powered by a 3.6-liter DOHC unit with four valves per cylinder and variable valve timing. This modern engine designed by GM (identical to the Cadillac STS, by the way) produces 252 horsepower and a respectable 243 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a five-speed automatic transmission with manual mode, it launches the XL7 from 0 to 100 kph in 8 seconds and allows great passing maneuvers considering the weight of the vehicle (80 to 120 kph in less than 8 seconds).

In terms of fuel consumption, despite the larger displacement, the V6 needs on average 11 L/100 km. I managed to obtain this result over hundreds of kilometres with an AWD model on the gorgeous roads of

Northern Ontario. In the city, the XL7 is obviously more thirsty (13.5 L/100 km for the AWD model and 12.9 for the FWD model according to Transport Canada). And remember: there's a 3,500 pounds towing capacity that allows you to bring your weekend toys everywhere you go.

Those interested in the technical stuff will appreciate the fact that the all-wheel drive system of the XL7 uses the same recipe than the recently released and joyful SX4 : a rear differential with active electronic management that allows an immediate and seamless transition from FWD to AWD when the road conditions make it necessary.

Connecting the 2007 XL7 to the ground is a new fully independent suspension with dependable MacPherson struts up front and an efficient multi-link design at the back. Overall, the suspension offers more travel and a great damping to help this big Japanese crossover to deliver car-like comfort and handling. Say goodbye to the unpleasant body roll that "true" truck-based SUVs suffer from! Moreover, in seven-passenger trim, the XL7 receives Nivomat rear shock absorbers with load-levelling to ensure a constant horizontal ride.
