It's a VW bestseller, and in a move that adds new style and technology, it just got even better. It's called the Touran, and its Volkswagens take on

the minivan. But it's probably not coming soon to a dealership near you.

The Touran package is all about versatility, style and utility. Under the hood, a selection of powerplants matches the vehicle to any need. Particularly interesting are the new TSI engines, which combine both a turbocharger and supercharger for impressive power and very low fuel consumption. A 140 horsepower TSI engine is available at launch with a 170 horsepower version following afterwards.

Of course, as world leaders in diesel technology, the German carmaker offers four turbodiesel engines for Touran buyers, and a natural gas (EcoFuel) engine is optional. All engines can be paired with VW's Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) technology for lightning fast gearshifts. In total, the Touran is available with 7 engines and several transmissions- talk about

selection!

The powerplant is only part of the package of course, and the Touran impresses in the styling area as well. Up front, a new chrome grille and bumper make the face instantly recognizable. Sharp looking headlamps available with bi-xenon illumination and static / dynamic cornering lights introduce a technology commonly found on vehicles far higher up the model line. The projectors can pivot up to 15 degrees to send lighting appropriately into dimly lit corners after dark, increasing safety for the driver, occupants and any pedestrians or animals sharing the roadway.

Speaking of occupants, they're sure to be entertained by the expanded list of standard and optional interior equipment. These include cruise control and an "RCD 300" radio CD system with MP3 player.

The average buyer of the Touran is between 28 and 49, most have more

than one child and the vast majority have a second car.

It's the stance VW takes with its Touran that has made it so popular. By not forgetting that sometimes driving and technology enthusiasts need to drive a small van, the Touran is well suited to further capitalize on the success it has already experienced in Europe since 2003.

Nearly 63,000 Touran models were sold in 2006 as measured at the end of September. The vehicle eclipsed the half-million mark at the end of last year, and all signs say that it's well on its way to the million vehicle milestone.
