What's more, wind noise is quite low for a convertible. The well-insulated, multi-layer retractable roof really makes the A4 Cabriolet a year-round performer. However, despite the size of the rear window and defogger, visibility is pretty limited, thereby multiplying blind spots. The tiny outside mirrors do not help either.
Taming the beast
The A4 delivers interesting performance. Like a wild stallion, though, you have to be gentle on the steering wheel and gas pedal. Accelerations are pleasant despite slightly harsh takeoffs, and once you've learned how to tame the beast, it proves much more docile. The 255-hp 3.2L V6 feels somewhat jolty at first, but it calms down at cruising speed. Meanwhile, the 6-speed Tiptronic transmission is effective at harnessing the engine's power and keeping fuel economy at reasonable levels.
Again, the shocks work great most of the time. On damaged roads, well, that's another story... and a bit of a shame for such a premium car.
Better with the top down?
The 2008 Audi A4 Cabriolet is a nice little car that's fun to drive any day of the year, although I didn't really have the chance to appreciate its top-down operation as the weather was still too cold.
While road conditions have to be favorable for anyone to fall in love with this convertible, it still remains a fundamentally sound luxury automobile. You'll get the most out of it when you use it properly... which requires a good deal of patience if you live in Quebec.
