Enter a world of pleasure

Monterey, California - BMW expects big things for the new 1-Series in North America. If you ask me, the automaker will be even more surprised than consumers. While the 128i becomes the new entry-level model in the Bavarian brand's lineup, it's also the key to enter a world of pleasure -- driving pleasure, of course. For high-performance enthusiasts, the higher-end 135i will be more attractive (see previous article), but the 128i is nonetheless a quick and civilized little Bimmer that offers legendary handling while maintaining a focus on comfort.

The BMW 1-Series has been eagerly awaited in Canada, it is finally here.

A bit of history
BMW entered the modern era with the introduction of the famous 2002tii in January 1968. The 1600 models (i, ti), launched in Geneva two years earlier, as well as the 1800 and 2000 models paved the way for the brand's first compact sports sedan. The 2002ti quickly came to symbolize Bavarian sports cars -- and could be considered as the little ancestor of M-Series machines.

With Solex dual-body carburetors allowing the engine to generate 120 horsepower (through 4- and 5-speed manual transmissions), it took racetracks, winding country roads and rally circuits by storm. Its slightly lowered suspension and front disc brakes allowed seasoned drivers to achieve amazing performances. Yet, at the same time, it offered just enough everyday functionality for running errands, going to work or travelling with the family on weekends.

Building on this winning formula, BMW developed the 128i and 135i that make up the new 1-Series.

Obvious family traits
The 128i is a BMW through and through: a powerful engine, a streamlined hood, a long wheelbase and a short, almost truncated rear end. If you look at the car from the back, you'll notice how narrow the roof is compared to the body. The flared fenders give it a taut, muscular look. Designers added a subtle trunklid-integrated spoiler to improve aerodynamics. Massive headlights wrap the tapered extremities of the front fascia and flank BMW's traditional double-kidney grille.

It would be difficult to take the 128i for anything other than a BMW.
