Power
Under the hood is a familiar yet efficient selection of engines. The base 4-cylinder model relies on GM's good old 2.4L Ecotec, already used in my other applications. Doesn't matter, you might say, because this mill delivers an efficient, worry-free performance. Unfortunately, the Malibu's 169-hp unit is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission that is not always up to the task.

The familiar and much appreciated 3.6L V6.

On the plus side, the LTZ model comes standard with the same 3.6L V6 engine that powers the Saturn Aura. Both cars also share the same platform.

This time, GM learned its lesson: as with the Aura, the V6 is mated to a 6-speed automatic that reacts instantaneously and allows the driver to get the most out of the available power, regardless of driving conditions.

Also, similar to the Aura Green Line, the new Malibu Hybrid uses the BASE technology -- sort of an electric starter system that only works in certain situations to limit the use of the gasoline engine. This model comes with the 4-cylinder engine but, interestingly, at under $27,000, which is barely $2,000 more than the price you would pay for a nicely equipped LT model.

A Malibu for everyone
Chevrolet likes to keep things simple... provided that they are complicated. Thus, a mere look at the list of available models is enough to confuse you. The base LS model starts at $22,995 and features the aforementioned Ecotec engine, 16-inch wheels, a 6-speaker audio unit (perfect for Twisted Sisters and the like, by the way), power windows and OnStar assistance with a one-year subscription to Turn-by-Turn Navigation.

Next are the 1LT model ($24,995) and Hybrid model ($26,995), which offer roughly the same features. Compared to the base Malibu, these two add 17-inch wheels, chrome exhaust tips, Stabilitrak and audio controls on the steering wheels.

The Malibu will now offer a hybrid variant.
