Made for the city
The transmission is almost a joke. This 4-speed autobox with overdrive is painfully slow to react. It's a real shame the 5-speed manual is not available with the GLS model.

The Accent GLS sedan is equipped with a 110-hp inline 4-cylinder engine.

Because of the small wheel size, handling performance and driving excitement are greatly affected. What's more, the Accent offers limited steering and braking capacity. On the other hand, it proves highly maneuverable in the city due to its compact dimensions; in fact, it might just be the ideal parking companion.

Visibility is good, with large windows and mirrors. Safety features are minimal; thank God I had the top-of-the-line model! Still, stability and traction control systems are nowhere to be found. This is an entry-level car through and through.

Competition
The 2008 Hyundai Accent is getting old real fast, especially when considering that most rivals are all-new or freshly redesigned. The Chevrolet Aveo LT and Pontiac Wave SE ($15,495) have been on the market for almost as long but they recently got a significant overhaul. The Accent's twin, the Kia Rio ($14,745) is also getting old and increasingly less attractive despite some nice promotions.

From this point on, the competition seriously intensifies. The Honda Fit ($16,180) offers much more value despite a higher selling price -- so does the Nissan Versa SL ($17,798). The Suzuki SX4 Sedan ($17,195) is considerably larger, while the Toyota Yaris Sedan ($14,945) offers class-leading reliability. Of course, let's not forget about the Volkswagen City Golf ($15,300), which is a much more rewarding car for drivers.

Wrap-up
The Hyundai Accent is not a bad car per se, but it's clearly showing signs of age in every respect, save for the price and warranty. It does a good job in the city, but out on the open road and in the country, it becomes significantly less enjoyable.

This is an entry-level car through and through.
