Intelligent key?
Doors automatically unlock as soon as you get close to the vehicle thanks to the intelligent keyless entry system. You don't even have to use a key to start the engine; simply turn the rotary switch and you're in business. When it's time to shut the engine, you turn the switch back in its original position. But here's the problem: you have to make sure that the switch is correctly positioned; otherwise, you will empty the battery in just a couple of hours. It happened to us on three separate occasions. I was furious! At first, I didn't realize what was going on; then, I found the problem. Nissan absolutely needs to revise this switch. Moreover, I don't understand why such an expensive vehicle is not equipped with a battery charge protection module that would shut down power to avoid emptying the battery. Plus, with the multiple beeping signals, it's hard to determine which one goes with the doors, starter, safety belts, radio, headlights, and so on.

Great visibility
Nissan engineers know quite well that such a sizeable SUV usually comes with large blind spots, so they focused on improving visibility for the driver. The right three-quarter angle is still a bit problematic, as with any other 7-passenger vehicle, but the mirrors are ideally sized and their adjustability makes it easier to see on each side of the Pathfinder. The LE model also features a perfectly located rearview camera offering a clear image on the navigation screen. I managed to hitch my trailer all by myself, without anyone else barking instructions. The effective front and rear wipers also improve visibility in inclement weather.

The powerful V8 never showed any signs of fatigue.

Towing capacity

Obviously, with such a powerful V8 engine, the Pathfinder can tow up to 3,175 kilos (7,000 pounds). A class-IV receiver hitch with 4-pin wiring is part of the standard equipment. As we quickly realized, it's better to leave the 4WD system on when towing a trailer. In 2WD mode, the steering is vague and the front wheels seem to float; you constantly have to correct the angle of the steering wheel to maintain a linear trajectory. In 4WD mode, this vagueness immediately disappears because the front wheels are actively driving the vehicle and remaining firmly planted. Both my colleague and I confirmed each other's impression.

It goes without saying that the 4WD system reduces fuel economy; however, we deemed it necessary to ensure our peace of mind. Considering the battery breakdowns, it proved difficult to determine our actual mileage. Anyway, we came up with an average of 17 L/100 km, which is satisfying for towing duties. I must point out, though, that the absence of a dedicated "tow mode" forces the driver to change gears manually to avoid frequent downshifts. The fifth gear is a mere overdrive. In fourth gear, the torquey engine delivers efficient driving dynamics, even during climbs.

On the road
In terms of braking, the ABS brakes came in quite handy. The front wheels had a tendency to lock, but the electronic brakeforce distribution system combined with ABS ensured superior control. The brake pedal is nicely positioned and effective. The Pathfinder proved to be stable on highways despite strong winds and heavy rain during our trip back. Considering the load we had to tow, we decided it was best to rely on the permanent 4WD mode. Without a trailer, 2WD is appropriate.

Favorable verdict
Except for the operation of the intelligent keyless entry system, we really appreciated the Pathfinder during this tow test. Cargo room is very generous and convenient. In addition, this V8-powered, 4WD truck has all the power needed to easily tow heavy loads.
