European Driving - Economy Pricing
The broad range of gearing provided by six cogs maximizes the performance potential of the modest engine- something desperately needed given the City Jetta's leisurely 12.1 second run from 0-100kph (10.4 seconds with manual transmission). And at 9.9 and 6.9 litres per 100KM of city and highway driving respectively, fuel economy is less than many of its rivals in this highly competitive field.

Plenty of front seat leg and headroom exists to meet the demands of the largest occupants.

Driving impressions

Finding optimal comfort in the City Jetta is easy. Plenty of front seat leg and headroom exists to meet the demands of the largest occupants. Rear seat legroom can become severely compromised if 'Mr. Big' in the front isn't willing to share. Although no lumbar adjustment exists, I found the driver's perch tremendously supportive and fatigue free during lengthy stints in the office.

Upon firing-up the City Jetta, one becomes aware of unwanted idle vibration. This sort of sensation is a bit of a throwback when compared to more modern engines; nevertheless it could be seen as adding a dose of sportiness, as could the growl produced by the powerplant when under hard acceleration. I really didn't mind the "accelerating acoustics" because once up to speed the City Jetta is a very quiet performer.

Econo-boxes, or sub-20K vehicles, tend to distinguish themselves from one and other and expose their shortcomings while on the highway. Here the City Jetta distances itself from the great mass of plebian econo-boxes by treating its occupants to a very serene, civilized ride. Road and wind noises are very well muted for this class of vehicle, and thanks to a sixth gear engine buzz is also under tight rein.

Further setting today's ride apart from others is its superbly engineered suspension setup and rigid chassis structure, which bind together to deliver ride and handling qualities much more consistent with higher priced European products from the likes of Audi and BMW.

I was impressed with the City Jetta's exceptional ability to absorb severe road degradation without mistreating its occupants or compromising its control and composure. The solidity of the vehicle's structural integrity is the foundation upon which these attributes are built, and, which enable VW's inexpensive sedan to standout from those less robust.

The City Jetta is also a pleasure to administer in the corners, where it imparts balance and poise with clarity and predictability. This is an extremely nimble sedan with a spirited soul and a sense of purpose, responding enthusiastically to driver inputs.

Road and wind noises are very well muted for this class of vehicle.
