With 211 horsepower fired up by 4 turbocharged cylinders, there's a nice blend presented between performance and mileage. Power isn't neck-snapping, though A4 Avant scoots along with pleasing urgency when asked to.
As is typical of turbo engines, things sound mediocre in most circumstances but pleasing when opened right up. Power comes on strong from low revs and stays on hard once the turbo gets up to speed, which happens after just a touch of lag.
The six-speed Tiptronic automatic shifts with near-DSG levels of speed and accuracy. Smooth, blipped downshifts are always on standby, and full-throttle upshifts emit a faint burp from the exhaust as the engine briefly cuts ignition for more accurate rev synchronization.
It's fun as automatics go, but unfortunately, there's no six-speed stick available.

The tester was priced at $53,450, including both the navigation and technology packages. These could be popular to varying degrees with gadget enthusiasts, though they're far from necessities.
Opt for neither package, and the A4 Avant's sticker drops to $47,750- perhaps more reasonable for some. Gadgets or not, A4 Avant eagerly proves itself as a sporty, stylish and up-scale hauler that's ready for anything, anytime.
