The second-generation Ford Escape has just been updated with more advanced powertrain technology, enabling higher performance and better fuel mileage than ever before. A new 2.5 liter four cylinder engine comes standard with 171 horsepower and more economical operation than the 2.3 liter unit it replaces, while the 3.0 liter V6 has been tuned to generate 240 horsepower. Variable timing systems are employed to ensure an optimized blend of performance and economy.

Both models come with a fuel-saving six-speed automatic transmission to replace the four-speed unit in previous models. A four-cylinder, front-drive model now boasts mileage figures of 28 highway/20 city MPG, while the V6 achieves highway mileage of 26 MPG and 24 MPG for front-drive and four-wheel-drive, respectively. A hybrid is available as well, boasting mileage as high as 34 MPG in city driving for a position as the most fuel efficient SUV on the market.

"With gas prices rising, we want to offer our customers even more fuel-efficient vehicles," says David Finnegan, Escape marketing manager. "At the same time, we don't want to compromise performance. The 2009 Escape proves that we can provide customers best-in-class fuel economy without asking them to sacrifice."

The changes apply to 2009 model year Escape models, which go on sale this summer.
