On trips, the $2,700 optional Sync entertainment, communication, and navigation system is very helpful but involving for an engaged driver to operate. The unit's screen is also low in relation to the driver's eye-line. I sometimes had trouble using my mobile phone by the car's Bluetooth wireless connection, but Sync was able to wirelessly play songs from my notebook computer. Powering toys on the go is a useful 110-volt outlet.
Outside, the Escape Hybrid has ubiquitous styling. Disappointingly, two of the vehicle's three rear brake lights work double-duty as turn signal indicators. Inside, the vehicle is comfortable and functional for up to five people. The main rear hatch release button broke (with the fuse still intact) two days into my test, rendering the door inoperable. Thankfully the window of the rear hatch still opened up. Under the rear cargo area lie the Hybrid's nickel-metal hydride batteries. These batteries breathe by way of an air vent located behind the driver's side back window.
Verdict
The 2009 Escape Hybrid front-wheel-drive starts at $35,849 (including destination charges). The strongest competitor for the vehicle in my opinion is the diesel-powered Volkswagen Jetta SportsWagen TDI. On paper, the Jetta has numerous advantages: more power, a lower curb weight, slightly more cargo capacity, a lower combined fuel consumption rating, and a lower price tag. Nevertheless, despite its rear hatch failing, the Escape Hybrid was a capable and comfortable means to relish a winter vacation in.
