Practical Colossus
Unveiled at the last Chicago Auto Show, the latest Hummer, dubbed the H3T, is a pickup version of the popular H3. Following the H3T Concept, the production model is an almost perfect blend of the concept and the standard version. The main difference is that the H3T proves decidedly practical thanks to a 5-foot box, big enough to easily load plywood panels or 4x8s once the tailgate is open. It boasts the capacities of a mid-size pickup.

The production model is an almost perfect blend of the H3T concept and the standard version.

The H3T defines a new niche in the declining extended-cab pickup segment. The superior off-road capabilities remain intact. Long suspension travel and 33-inch tires mounted on the brand's typical 16-inch wheels perpetuate the Hummer's indestructible image.

The H3T shares its engines with the H3. The 3.7-litre, 5-cylinder DOHC mill producing 242 hp powers the basic versions, while the 5.3-litre V8 producing 300 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque takes care of the Alpha version.

The five-cylinder engine is still offered with a choice of two transmissions: a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic, which is the only one available in the Alpha. Towing capacities are still impressive: the standard engine can haul 2,240 kg while the powerful V8 has a slight advantage with a 2,277-kg capacity.

Although the H3T isn't designed for hauling heavy loads, it'll happily serve as a backup and will prove itself an especially useful tool for all types of activities, from extreme sports to backwoods hunting.

It's extremely well equipped, boasting a complete list of accessories. This Hummer has its occupants' comfort at heart, offering a leather-covered steering wheel, XM satellite radio, an OnStar system and a universal remote system. However, the H3T really consolidates its reputation for indestructibility with its mechanical equipment.
