Two all-new Toyotas

The world's number one automaker took advantage of the 2007 SEMA Show in Las Vegas to unveil its upcoming 2009 Corolla and Matrix.

Built by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) in Cambridge, Ontario, both new models represent a significant milestone in Toyota's North American history. The year was 1966 when the Corolla made its debut this side of the Pacific. Thirty-six years later, in 2002, the Matrix rolled out of the TMMC assembly lines -- the only plant in the world where it is manufactured. Over the years, more than 2 million Corollas have been sold. The Matrix, meanwhile, managed to sell about 460,000 units in just over five years.

Ten generations of Corollas
The Corolla's 10th generation, which is set to hit the market next February in CE, LE, S and XRS trim, gets a completely redesigned bodywork with sportier lines and a lower profile. Inside, the layout was carefully executed to offer even more storage, a modern audio unit with MP3/WMA and satellite radio compatibility as well as a tilt/telescopic steering wheel, a rare feature in the compact segment.

A more dynamic Matrix
As for the 2009 Matrix, the second generation also benefits from a comprehensive aesthetic overhaul. The new, more assertive styling starts at the front with a more aggressive fascia and transitions to a tapered, wedge-shaped rear end that makes a louder statement than the previous model. The fresh new interior includes a massive and tall dashboard in wrap-around style, meaning that front occupants enjoy a more cozy, cockpit-like environment. The rear passenger compartment is roomier and the seatbacks fold completely flat to increase cargo room.
