Another Chrysler-sourced component is the 4.0-liter engine. However, at 251 horsepower, it makes the Routan feel underpowered compared to similar V6-equipped minivans. On the plus side, the 6-speed automatic transmission works beautifully and quite subtly, although the button on the shifter looks like it could fall off at any time.
The Routan is the first-ever Volkswagen to be built in Canada. Inspection of the vehicle is first performed by Chrysler and then by Volkswagen, as if the latter didn't trust the Americans. Four different trim levels are available, with prices ranging from $27,975 (Trendline) to $49,975 (fully-loaded Execline). The Routan also comes with a selection of seven exterior colors. Volkswagen is planning to sell about 5,000 units a year in Canada.
Despite declining sales in the minivan segment over the past several years, Wolfsburg still hopes to regain 15 percent of its customer base and increase its market presence over here. The Routan is a fine vehicle and, considering the hasty development process, they hardly could have done better. Hopefully for VW, buyers will become addicted to the German sauce.
