A thick floor and 200-millimetre ground clearance certainly don’t make access any easier, but once you’ve found your way inside, you’ll be treated to comfortable seats offering adequate bolsters and a sporty driving position. Don’t expect much in terms of rearward visibility, however, as the Prius-like lower tailgate window does little to make up for the terrible three-quarter view (a result of the narrow side windows and disproportionate D-pillars).
I felt rather pessimistic about the prospect of loading cargo into the ZDX given the radical roofline, but lo and behold, a whopping 745 litres of room awaited me. Of course, tall objects have to be laid down, which is a good thing the rear seatbacks fold forward to increase capacity to 1,580 litres. By comparison, the larger-looking BMW X6 ($65,700) offers only 570 litres of cargo room with the seatbacks up.
ZDX is to MDX what X6 is to X5
The new Acura ZDX brings its A-game under the hood with a 300-horsepower, 3.7-litre VTEC engine. Accelerations are quite spirited and, like the vast majority of Honda/Acura cars, maximum torque (270 lb-ft) is available at a high 4,500 rpm.
Considering the potency and weight of the machine, the average fuel economy of 12 L/100 km isn’t so bad… until you realize we’re talking about premium gas and a 79.5-litre tank. Now that will put a hole in your credit card!
I found the steering a bit too assisted and not quite crunchy enough, if you know what I mean. Fear not, however, as there is plenty of fun to be had behind the wheel of the ZDX. Performance and traction are both fantastic courtesy of the brand’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), although some heaviness can be felt at all times.
The six-speed automatic transmission is a pretty quick operator and the paddle shifters on the steering wheel make the experience even more rewarding. Powerful brakes and a firm suspension setup add to the vehicle’s safe, planted ride.
Thank you, Mrs. Christensen!
The 2010 Acura ZDX really stands out from the crowd, including all these hot new extravagantly-styled, coupe-like SUVs/CUVs. The delightfully-sharp angles and inherent femininity will no doubt attract a lot of potential buyers. Conversely, the base MSRP of $59,590 (with Tech Package) might prove to be a turnoff. That’s the price you have to pay to get Mrs. Christensen’s autograph in your driveway.
I’d be more than happy to own such a unique and exclusive automobile myself.
