Until smaller Fiat-based vehicles arrive, Caliber is Dodge's entry-level vehicle, though it is far from small. It shares its architecture with Jeep Compass/Patriot (unlike those vehicles, Caliber is not available in AWD).
For 2010 Caliber continues its trend of late of offering less model variations and powertrain options. Gone are the sporty SRT4, and its 2.4-litre turbo-charged engine. Gone also is last year's base engine, the 1.8-litre I4. That leaves the last year's optional 2.0-litre 158-hp I4 as the sole Caliber powerplant for 2010. Like those other fours, it was co-developed with Hyundai as a "world" engine. Its automatic transmission is a CVT.
Caliber pricing is about $1,000 less than comparably equipped Jeep models. The Caliber hierarchy model is SE ($16,495), SXT ($18,795), and the new-for-2010 SXT Sport Plus ($20,990).
SXT upgrades include ABS, air-con, heated mirrors, power door locks, key less entry, 17-inch wheels, and touring suspension. SXT Sport Plus models also offer 4-wheel disc brakes, fog lamps, speed control, body colour accents, Sirrus, leather wrapped steering wheel, power heated mirrors, and 18-inch wheels
In 2009 Caliber introduced a premium 30 GB MP3 radio system with Uconnect.
For 2010, active head restraints and iPod connectivity (via a cable in the glovebox) have been made standard on all Caliber models.
Last year, Patriot and Compass received new interiors, and this year it was Caliber's turn. The makeover includes restyled upper instrument panel, soft touch centre console armrest, restyled doors with soft touch armrests, a longer seat recline handle, improved seat track covers, electronic temperature controls, and improved air con performance.
A new option is the remote starter, which can be ordered on SXTs equipped with the optional Security Group.
Caliber continues to offer good size for the buck, good safety, and aggressive styling.
