When style isn't everything
Obviously, the third row is in the image of third rows the world over: hard to access and uncomfortable for normal-size people, but nevertheless practical in some situations. On the flip size, and this is normal, it seriously amputates the available cargo area.

The real star is the engine
But the true beauty of the Lincoln MKT lies under the hood, where a 355-hp, 3.5-litre V6 EcoBoost engine is comfortably nestled. “Only six cylinders?” the critics will say, eyeing the size of the beast and imagining its ponderous forward motion. “Well yeah, and that’s more that enough,” will answer those who’ve tested it and understood how the EcoBoost technology actually works.

I’m not here to give you a crash course in mechanical engineering, just know that the EcoBoost is a system that couples a smaller engine with a twin turbocharger and direct injection. The result is indisputable. Not only can the car release its full power without balking, but it does so more efficiently, using the smaller displacement to improve fuel economy.

And on the road, the MKT in no way gives the impression of suffering from a lack of juice. Our road test took us over the highways of Quebec and even Ontario on a return trip to Toronto, and not once did we feel it lacking in the power department.

If you add our tester’s all-wheel drive, a tad slow to react in extreme situations but amply sufficient for normal use, very slightly sleepy steering system that you have to learn master, it’s so smooth, and diabolically efficient brakes (I had to pull an emergency braking manoeuvre right in the middle of a Toronto highway, and the beast promptly and effortlessly came to a halt), you get an efficient and contemporary vehicle.

Of course, you won’t be breaking any fuel efficiency records. The MKT does consume over 13.2 litres per 100 km on average, but considering its masse and carrying capacity, that number is still well under segment standards. Still, it’s a little high for the average family.

Comfort-wise, the Lincoln MKT is above reproach. As for the drive, it falls victim to its size and its enormous 20-inch tires, which sway a little in tight corners, but it proves so comfortable in normal driving conditions that you quickly forget all the small inconveniences.

In fact, the MKT is so darn comfortable I actually enjoyed driving the 401 for a change!
