Base price for a 2011 Terrain SLE-1 is $27,465. Our $29,940 SLE-2 tester includes $325 18-inch alloy wheels, the $680 Convenience Package (heated seats, remote starter), the $345 Cargo Management Package (cargo cover, cargo net, roof rail crossbars) and the $300 Protection Package (all-season floor mats, splash guards), for a grand total of $31,590 before tax, freight and delivery charges.
Very few rivals offer as much equipment in a 4-cylinder, two-wheel drive format. Those who do include the Hyundai Tucson GLS ($26,799), the Kia Sportage EX ($26,995), the Mazda CX-7 GX ($29,490), the Nissan Rogue SV ($28,498), the Toyota RAV4 Limited ($30,185) and the Volkswagen Tiguan Comfortline ($32,675).
Something that bugs us terribly is the Terrain’s $2,045 freight & PDI fee, which is excessive, especially compared to the $810 GM charges in the USA. In addition, the Terrain is built in Canada, which makes it even harder to swallow. According to GM, that sum includes dealer fees.
Clearly, the GMC Terrain is a competent little truck that stands out in a crowded, competitive and trendy vehicle segment. Its rugged looks, fuel economy and interior space will please many compact SUV shoppers, as long as they restrain from ticking all the option boxes and jacking up the Terrain’s price.
