Performance Defines this Upscale Sedan
There’s a definite cockpit-feel to the G37’s business office that belies its 4-door sedan configuration. I enjoyed the sense of control and inclusion that the architecture imparts. It’s from this “connected-ness” that one appreciates the responsiveness and performance of the all-wheel-drive G37xS.

Praiseworthy performance
As its badge avows, the G37 is powered by a 3.7-litre DOHC V6 engine which utilizes Infiniti’s Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVVTCS) to produce a healthy inventory of 328 horsepower @ 7,000 rpm and 269 pound-feet of torque @ 5,200 rpm.

Power from the rev-happy mill flows through a 7-speed automatic transmission featuring a Driver Sport mode, shift paddles and downshift rev matching to ignite the senses. Performance purists can opt for the M6 Sport package, which includes a 6-speed manual stick and sport-tuned suspension.

My tester was equipped with the autobox, which performed flawlessly while directing power to all four corners for the ultimate in traction. The extra grip enabled the G-car to launch itself with impressive gusto while slotting gears quickly and efficiently.

No acceleration “flat spots” were noted; the G37xS pulls quite respectably throughout its broad powerband, reinforcing the performance orientation of this fashionable ride.

Ride and handling co-exist
The G37xS rewards with crisp, sharp steering response that’s precise and nicely weighted. The vehicle remains flat and wonderfully composed during cornering. Secure, confidence-inspiring handling is one of the G37’s greatest strengths, and it doesn’t come at the expense of ride quality.

There’s no doubt that the G37xS resides at the performance end of the continuum between pillow-soft and bone-jarring ride dynamics, but not undesirably so. The ride may be firmer than some luxury-minded folk seek but certainly not for the driving enthusiast.

I could live with the comfort level of the G37’s ride given its rewarding athleticism but truth be known, I’d be happier with a little more absorbency. A couple of other small matters worth mentioning include the exhaust note of the 3.7-litre mill and the absence of a folding rear seat.
