A complement of seven gears in the autobox amplifies the ability of the more powerful engine to effortlessly hustle the QX56’s massive curb weight of 2,654kg (5,850lbs). In fact, the combination of extended output and additional gears significantly fortifies the big Infiniti, infusing it with strong acceleration and impressive passing performance.
Although the QX56 impresses in a straight line, it reveals its mass in the corners.
Plenty of weight to redirect
I took the boys skiing and loved the way that the QX56 devoured the steep mountain road on the way up. Loaded with teens and their gear, including my aging boards, put no strain whatsoever on the powerful QX but due to its notable heft, this isn’t the most nimble of rigs.
Flying into a switchback isn’t highly advised; that said, the QX manages to hold its line more than expected when pushed. Frankly, I’m quite content with the handling prowess of the QX56 given its rewarding ride quality.
This is a remarkably smooth riding vehicle. And let’s not overlook the fact that it’s a truck-based SUV with real off-road capability that includes low-range gearing along with ‘snow’ and ‘tow’ modes. I doubt many owners will exploit the full potential of the QX56 but they’ll certainly appreciate its extraordinary comfort and refinement.
Eloquence and opulence abound
Independent of its other attributes, the ability of the QX56 to spoil its occupants must be considered its greatest strength. Despite its size and accompanying “not so green” social statement, I found it to be immensely satisfying and relaxing to drive.
Visibility from the elevated driving position is expansive and the sound quality from the 13-speaker premium Bose audio system converted the cabin into a concert hall replete with leather upholstery and real wood trim. The exceptionally quiet operation of the QX56 is the ideal backdrop to experience whichever genre one is in the mood for.
My tester was equipped with second-row seating comprised of two perches separated by a large console. This meant that the cramped third-row seat had to be accessed if more than three passengers were to be ferried. Rear seat video entertainment ensured that such fares were adequately amused during lengthy trips.
