Delightful but expensive long distance cruising
Although my cruising didn’t involve any highway distances greater than what could be covered in an hour or so, it was abundantly obvious that the 2011 QX56 would be the ideal extended-trip vehicle. The only downside to which pertains to fuel economy—or a lack thereof. My tester’s on-board computer displayed an average fuel economy reading of 19.6L/100km of driving.
Granted, my motoring was primarily city and mountain based, but still, fuel consumption is a concern despite the QX56’s rating of 15.7L and 10.3L/100km of the city and highway driving respectively. Believe it or not, these results are actually a considerable improvement over last year’s more dismal rating.
2011 QX56 wrap
Despite the stigma around large truck-based SUVs and their collective need for binge-fuelling, I enjoyed every moment behind the wheel of my tester. If I had a magic wand, I’d vastly reduce its fuel consumption and its accompanying carbon footprint. After that, I’d sit back and enjoy every luxurious kilometre as they silently and smoothly rolled by.
