BMW's 2012 128i and 135i will both come nicely equipped with the usual Bimmer safety features: Dynamic Stability Control, Advanced Head Protection System, a slew of airbags, as well as a roll-over protection system (for the cabriolet models). BMW's xDrive trim has yet to trickle down to the 1 Series, but we'll gladly take the 135i's RWD for now sans complaint.
A smaller package definitely didn't make BMW skimp on the standard amenities available on the 128i and 135i: Xenon headlights, HiFi speaker system, Bluetooth wireless technology, Dynamic Cruise Control, multifunction 3-spoke, leather sport steering wheel, along with a boatload of other creature-comfort features you'll spend the first week of ownership oohing and aahing over.
As far as options go, the one that caught my eye was (obviously), the M Sport Package available on both the coupé and cabriolet versions of the 135i and 128i. The $2,100 package includes upgraded 18” wheels for the 135i and 17-inchers for the 128i, a heap of M-badged accessories (leather steering wheel, sports seats, door sills, gearshift lever), and a high speed maximum upgrade.
Otherwise, options across the board include leather interior trim, sport suspension (standard on the 135i) and your choice of a plethora of interior and exterior colour combinations.
Pricing on the 2012 1 Series models sits in the mid-$30,000 to just-below-$50,000 range (with the coupé 128i starting at $36,000 and the cabriolet 135i reaching the $48,700 MSRP mark), which might make some cringe. Again, this is a small vehicle; but for the build quality and drive experience, I say it's well worth every penny and this 2012 reincarnation is no exception.
