Comparo 2.0: These cars will spend 99% of their lives on the road
2- 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T R-Spec

This is where we initially thought we would find the Genesis Coupe R-Spec in the track test. As we quickly realized, this car is meant to be many things to many people, but not a track star.

The most obvious revelation was boost, and lots of it. Circumnavigating twisty backwoods country roads turned out to be a pleasure with this car.

The approach to a blind cresting, right-hander would be met with a generous dose of confidence-building, Brembo-stopping power, a heel-toe downshift into second, followed by a clipped apex. And as the wheel would unwind, the magic would take place. Spooling, whistling and whooshing, the turbo would shoot the car forward with amazing thrust. A quick shift into third and it would start all over again. This car is fast.

The GT-like suspension has plenty of give-and-take and never runs out of options when keeping the wheels in contact with the tarmac. The ride is controlled and the car's avoirdupoids is slightly less noticeable on the road versus the track.

The on-off behavior of the Gen Coupe is tricky, but once mastered it becomes a surface-to-air missile.

The most annoying aspect of the driving experience comes from the clutch pedal. Its complete lack of progressiveness and propensity to stick -- or, more precisely, return to its initial position slowly -- is disconcerting. For educational purposes, I verified the clutch in our Veloster Turbo tester and a few other Hyundais from staff members and found their behavior to be the same: Something to look into, Hyundai?

This 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T R-Spec is a stunner physically; thumbs up and questions as to the car's origins were common. For this alone, there are some out there who consider looks to be vital.
