A slap in the face
Looks that don't back down
As with all of the Dodge Chargers, BMW 550i, Infiniti M56 and Mercedes E 550, the R-Spec's styling has all the presence one could desire. It’s got gorgeous 19” wheels, a deep front fascia, subtle chrome accents strewn about the car's finely sculpted body and the all-important dual tailpipes.

In base form, the Genesis is quite appreciable thanks to its modern shape and chiselled flanks. In R-Spec mode and draped in White Satin Pearl, the Genesis could not be any more luxurious or stunning. Much like a Dodge Charger R/T, a Genesis 5.0 R-Spec rolling along gets passers-by to do a double-take and wonder how fast and/or expense it must be. Remember, the Genesis sports only one Hyundai logo on the boot lid.

Expensive or inexpensive?
Truth is that this car is the second most expensive car in Hyundai's entire line-up. At $53,499, the R-Spec is cheaper price-wise than the Equus which starts at over $66k, but far pricier than a totally loaded 300C RWD with all options which rings in at around $46k. People will think that this is far too much money for a Hyundai and in a way, it is. The R-Spec is a serious bargain compared to the Germans but is still a tough pill to swallow. Look at it this way: mechanically speaking, the R-Spec's got more than all the others. What do you suppose you'll get equipment-wise? Exactly.

This Genesis' got everything 99.9% of the car buying population could ever hope for in any mode of transportation. The list is actually so long that I'm having a hard time figuring out where to start. How about like this: heated seats and steering wheel, a cooled driver seat, power everything including rear sunshade, a Lexicon 17-speaker audio system, 8” touchscreen with navigation, intelligent cruise control, Bluetooth, woodgrain accents, high-end ultra-soft leather and truckloads more. You do get your money's worth compared to the Germans and even the Americans.

Mike Deslauriers and I made the long trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake from Montreal in this car to attend the AJAC TestFest. We were stoked at the thought of being cajoled to the nines in the Genesis; however, both of us were equally none too impressed with seat comfort or more particularly, the driving position. We both felt as though we were sitting on the seat as opposed to in it, and despite a power tilt and telescoping wheel, we were never right. The rear bench is where, as passengers, we should have spent our time as it is comfortable.
