Elegant bodywork
Some of my colleagues aren't too thrilled about the Infiniti M's looks, which aren't as hard-edged as the smaller G's. Personally, though, I don't mind its more subtle bodywork, with curves and sweeping lines that remind me a little of Jaguar's long hood/short deck style. It may not stand out from the crowd of midsize luxury sedans, but one thing's for sure: we unanimously think the M displays a high level of elegance.

Inside, our tester is dressed up in light-coloured upholstery, with detail stitching on the leather seats and door panels. The atmosphere is spruced-up with metallic and genuine wood trim, and the assembly quality is excellent.

On the centre stack, the sound system controls are easy to reach and operate, while the multimedia system and climate control buttons are tilted upwards and a little farther away. Passenger space front and rear is good, although the transmission tunnel cuts into available foot space for the middle rear occupant; the competition is no better.

As for trunk space, the M Hybrid offers a volume of 320 litres and the rear seatback doesn't fold down; other versions of the M get a 422-litre boot.

Lots of features (read: gizmos)
The M35h includes a lot of features we expect to see in a midsize luxury car. It also means the car is packed with the latest in electronic safety driving aids, such as adaptive cruise control, distance control assist, intelligent brake assist, forward collision warning, blind-spot warning and intervention, lane-departure warning and prevention, as well as pre-crash seatbelts.

Some are useful, some are annoying, some can be turned off, some can't; the self-tightening belts are downright infuriating.

You also get a 16-speaker Bose sound system that sounds phenomenal, touch-screen navigation, Bluetooth phone and streaming audio connectivity, a heated wheel and power adjustments for just about everything.
