Casket sound levels inside
Like in any other Benz S-Class, hopping in and closing the door secludes you from all the noise of the outside world. And you still get a full complement of standard features in the S 350, such as a full leather interior, climate control, navigation with voice control, an intelligent key system, power-adjustable everything, a parking guidance system and satellite radio.

Our tester was also spruced up with over $18,000 in options, including an AMG styling package with 19” alloys, adaptive cruise control, ventilated seats, a massaging driver’s seat, a panoramic sunroof and more.

At 560 litres, the S-Class’ trunk is also one of the biggest in the business, fitting given the sheer size of the car.

Redesign on its way
The current generation of the S-Class has been around since the 2007 model year, so it’s safe to assume a brand-new model will turn up sometime in 2012 as a 2013. On the outside, the big sedan doesn’t show its age, although a makeover for the cockpit would be most welcome.

Now that the Maybach brand will be officially retired next year, the S-Class will receive extra responsibilities such as carrying the German brand’s flagship status.

The S 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC is an interesting addition to Mercedes-Benz’s large luxury sedan, and an interesting move in itself. For the moment, , it will enjoy a certain exclusivity in the US and Canada, since none of its competitors (the Audi A8, the BMW 7 Series and the Jaguar XJ, to name a few) can flaunt a diesel powertrain. Personally, I wouldn’t be ashamed at all to drive around in an oil-burning S-Class.
