Mercedes-Benz announced today that the latest iteration of the 2012 SLK will start at $66,500 CAD, exactly the same price as the 2011 model.

For the moment, only the SLK350, with its 302-hp, 3.5-litre, direct injection V6 and seven-speed autobox with manual mode, will be available in Canadian dealerships. The more affordable SLK250 (201-hp, 1.8-litre, turbocharged four-cylinder) and the SLK55 AMG with its beastly 5.5-litre V8 will crop up in November.

The noteworthy changes include more pronounced fenders, a slightly more spacious cockpit and a roomier trunk when the top is down, one of the roadster’s main drawbacks in the past.

Also, the cabin will feature a centre console identical to that of the new C-Class. The base version inherits brushed aluminum trim, with available glossy ash or hazel wood trim for a classier look.

Will it be enough for the Merc to finally emerge from the BMW Z4 and Audi TT’s shadow? Lesley Wimbush is currently vigorously putting it through its paces and will have the scoop for you shortly.

Stay tuned!
