Perhaps it was the pricing announcement. After all, with a starting figure of just $41,400 US (which will probably be closer to $50k here in Canada when it arrives in the spring of 2012), it is going to throw a slight curveball into the mix for some manufacturers!
The Infiniti JX will feature a 3.5L V6 producing 265 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque. It will also be equipped with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), a first for an Infiniti product. Front-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations will be offered, although here in Canada, we’ll probably only get AWD. In terms of size, the JX is about an inch smaller in every dimension than a Ford Explorer.
The JX has also strayed a little from the norm in its interior styling, as was readily noticeable by the number of car execs eagerly clambering through each and every seat. The new interior is impressive, and from the look on most of the executives’ faces, I’m not alone in that line of thinking. Their hands and eyes were running everywhere, on the inside of the vehicle, and on the exterior. In fact, you’d be forgiven for thinking this was some sort of alien spaceship rather than a recently introduced automobile!
Then suddenly, it dawned on me…The other manufacturers simply hadn’t seen this vehicle coming at them! They were like a herd of deer struck by the headlights of an oncoming vehicle. What I was witnessing here was a lot of “oh my God”, “what is this” and “how will this affect our sales figures.”
Now it’s no secret that it’s hard to keep secrets in the car industry, but in all honesty, Infiniti did offer us a preview of this vehicle earlier in the year. So what happened? did the others think it was a joke? Were they taking a day off, or enjoying their afternoon nap? Whatever it was, this new Infiniti certainly has them on the hop now. In fact, I’m guessing that as I write this, automotive designs teams around the planet are busy redesigning their designs.
All I can say is, “Well done Infiniti, it’s not every day that you manage to surprise the hell out of your competition”. You certainly did this time, and I was rather pleased to be there to witness it!
