Here are our findings in the final order per trucks following the tests.
4 - 2014 Toyota Tundra (72.5%)
Hitching: Very easy. Camera display includes a centerline, making hitching a breeze.
Acceleration ¼ mile: 110 km/h.
Passing: Impressive and quick. The quick-shifting transmission expertly manages the V8's power.
Obstacle avoidance followed by braking: Much body roll. ABS and stability control kicked in immediately. In the manoeuvre, one rear wheel left the ground.
Braking: Powerful and responsive.
Overall stability: Quite good. Despite roll, control was workable. Given its on-road performance, it did better than expected. Keeping a straight line does require constant corrections.
General comments: The transmission's nervous nature helps keep things going. We are concerned that, in the long run, this will impact overall fuel consumption. The V8's soundtrack, although pleasant at first, becomes serious aural assault after a while.
3 - 2014 GMC Sierra (78.0%)
Hitching: Easy, but required a few extra tries before lining up perfectly.
Acceleration ¼ mile: 110 km/h. In spite of traction control being on, the Sierra experienced a fair amount of wheel spin on take off.
Passing: Disappointing. The lazy or slow-to-react transmission is the main cause of this along with some throttle response lag. Once in gear, the 5.3L comes online.
Obstacle avoidance followed by braking: Limited and controlled body roll. ABS did not intervene.
Braking: Spongy pedal feel. Powerful but pedal travel is somewhat disconcerting.
Overall stability: Very good overall. Suspension and steering maintain a true heading.
General comments: In 2WD, the Sierra had the hardest time of the lot keeping wheel spin under control. Loaded, the Sierra's poorly sorted unladen ride improved favourably. As well, its extremely quiet cabin made for a relaxing driving environment.
