Say whatever you want about its exterior design, the Acura RDX remains one of the most reliable and practical options in the compact luxury crossover segment. The 2017 model is already available in Canada starting at $42,190. Here’s a preview of what you’ll find…

Proven powertrain

It all starts with Honda’s 3.5L i-VTEC V6, which in this application produces 279 horsepower and 252 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and Intelligent Control all-wheel drive. With the 2017 Acura RDX, a maximum of 40% of the available torque can be sent to the rear wheels. This system may not be as sharp and tenacious as Acura’s renowned SH-AWD, but it’s close.

As far as fuel consumption goes, expect 12.4L/100km in the city and 8.7L/100km on the highway ― or 10.7L/100km combined ― thanks in part to Variable Cylinder Management (the RDX shuts down some of the cylinders that aren’t needed in certain driving situations). We’re talking about premium gasoline here, though.

Standard equipment

The 2017 Acura RDX is pretty well equipped even in base configuration. Look for 18” alloy wheels, Jewel Eye LED headlights and taillights, a power moonroof and rear liftgate, a 360W stereo with SiriusXM, a multi-angle rearview camera with guidelines, a driver’s seat with 8-way power adjustment including lumbar support and 2-position memory, and smart entry with push-button start.

Confidence on the road is maximized by the AcuraWatch driver-assist features including Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Departure Warning, and Forward Collision Warning with Collision Mitigation Braking.

Tech and Elite models

Priced at $45,190, the RDX Tech adds a Blind Spot Information system with Cross Traffic Monitor for increased safety. Buyers also get a navigation system with voice recognition, a 410W ELS premium audio unit with 10 speakers and hard disk drive, heated rear seats, rain-sensing windshield wipers, plus AcuraLink connectivity.

Finally, the top-of-the-line RDX Elite turns your $46,790 into all that and more including a unique wheel design, front and rear parking sensors, fog lights, auto-dimming side mirrors, and ventilated front seats.

Oh, and by the way, you can fold the 60/40 split rear seats in all models and enjoy 2,178 litres of cargo room ― perfect for several golf bags or a mountain of grocery bags.
