After premiering officially in Detroit in January, the new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado will be making its debut in the coming months, and we are slowly getting details regarding this highly anticipated new product from the GM group. Today the company announced it will be adding two new turbo engine options to the product offering, a gas- and a diesel-powered one.
These bring the total number of engine options available to buyers to five.
The new engines are 2.7L 4-cylinder turbo and a 3.0L 6-cylinder turbo-diesel. The latter, which will only become available early in 2019, will serve to compete head-on with the diesel offer now available from Ford. As for RAM, questions regarding the return of the EcoDiesel variant remain unanswered.
The turbo approach provides GM with an added weapon to go to war with Ford, whose products include the famed EcoBoost turbo offerings. It remains to be seen if GM’s future turbos will match Ford’s in terms of power, and if they’ll be more reliable.
With the exception of the diesel engine, each of the motors available with the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado will benefit from a cylinder deactivation system, and some of those will be an improved new version. The current Active Fuel Management (AFM) system shuts down half of the cylinders when the vehicle is at highway cruising speed. The upgraded Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) system uses the number of cylinders required in a given situation, and can have only one cylinder be in use.
Add to that three types of automatic transmission and the model already offers a feast of possible combinations to choose from – and it hasn’t even launched officially yet.
Here’s what the offering looks like for the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado:
- 4.3L V6, AFM system, 6-speed automatic. Power: 285 hp, 305 lb-ft
- 2.7L 4-cylinder turbo, AFM system, 8-speed automatic. Power: 310 hp, 348 lb-ft
- 3.0L 6-cylinder turbo-diesel, 10-speed automatic. Power: TBA
