400 horses
With the price of gas reaching nosebleed heights this year, a truck like this brings a certain financial penalty, no way around it. The 2022 F-150 Tremor comes with a 3.5L EcoBoost V6 like the Raptor, but here it’s not as high-performance as in that hot rod. Of course, it still delivers 400 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque, so it’s not like this truck has any trouble getting going in a hurry. Really, coupled with the 10-speed auto transmission, the twin-turbo V6 works very well indeed with this Tremor truck.
Let’s face it, the levels of driving pleasure delivered by a pickup like the F-150 don’t compare with those provided by, say, a Mustang GT. This version of the pickup behaves like the other versions, in the sense that it hops around a lot on weathered surfaces, especially with an empty cargo box behind it. It's better with a good load behind it, but in return you’ll feel more pain at the pump!
On the other hand, the adjustments made to the suspension do change the vehicle's reactions a bit. As mentioned, the springs are elevated, while the shocks on this model are monotube up front and twin-tube in the rear, which translates into smoother damping at low speeds, which is exactly what off-road enthusiasts are looking for.
As for the EcoBoost V6, it does a pretty good job of propelling the truck when your right foot gets heavy, although blistering acceleration isn't recommended in these two-dollars-per-litre-of-gas times.
Off-road versions of light-duty trucks aren't always comfortable, but in this case, the Tremor is definitely the most comfortable F-150 in the lineup, behind the amazing Raptor with its Fox shocks. And when you combine the truck's rigid chassis with soft seats, occupants are guaranteed to travel in comfort. Add to that the peacefulness of the crew cab and you have a vehicle that's as cozy as a luxury sedan. And no, I'm not exaggerating.
The last word
Ford is no dummy in producing all these variants of its best-selling model. Basically the risk is near-zero, such is the success the automaker continues to enjoy with its F-Series truck, year after year. The only cloud in this very big silver lining is the EcoBoost V6's gas-guzzling ways, a not insignificant detail given the current price of gas.
Entrepreneurs who need a pickup truck on a daily basis can often pass the cost of that on to their customers, but for young families, it's increasingly difficult to absorb the exorbitant cost of refilling this behemoth. But for those who can do it, and pay the $85,000 pluc asking price for the model, they get a very practical everyday vehicle that can advance deep into the woods or on those rough roads that lead to the cottage.
