Representatives of the Government of Quebec, the City of Montreal, the Renault-Nissan Alliance and Communauto, one of the world's largest and North America's first car sharing service, today announced that 50 Nissan Leaf all-electric cars would be joining the Communauto fleet before the end of 2011.

A special committee was also appointed to evaluate and implement a future public charging infrastructure.

"Historically, Quebec has always been at the forefront of the electric car scene and Communauto is a prime example. With today’s announcement, we will keep driving innovation forward," said Benoît Robert, President of Communauto.

The aforementioned committee will oversee how the charging infrastructure is implemented across Montreal and Quebec City, Communauto’s two operating markets. Nothing has been confirmed yet with regard to the number of charging stations and their location.

"We want to go forward and be ready for when electric cars become mainstream. Hydro-Québec already has agreements with Mitsubishi, Ford and Toyota. Today, we’re adding the Nissan Leaf as a new driving force," said Deputy Premier Nathalie Normandeau. "With financial incentives of up to $10,000 already on the table, we’re convinced that implementing public charging stations is the missing link to electrify most of the vehicle fleet across the province."

She added: "This partnership represents one more step toward delivering the government’s strategic plan for electric vehicles. We’re developing a series of concrete measures that will allow us to set favorable conditions for the electrification of Quebec’s vehicle fleet. Since 97 percent of our electricity comes from clean and renewable sources, Quebec is ideally positioned to make this project successful and sustainable."
