Have you ever thought of working on the production line building new vehicles? If so, then you might just be in luck.

Due to the popularity of its Edge and Lincoln MKX crossover vehicles, and the added production of the new Flex, Ford is now taking applications for 500 new positions at its Oakville Assembly Plant.

Yes, as we all know, the pay is pretty reasonable, but along with your weekly paycheck, don't you also take home a multitude of aches and pains due to repetitively lifting heavy automotive parts?

Not at Ford you don't. You see, the company has embraced the computer age to such extent that it now plays an important role in almost every aspect of the business, and that includes employee health and safety.

To find out more about this, I recently visited the 2008 Health & Safety Conference in Toronto which is organized by the IAPA. Yes, I know, with a nickname like Crash, I'm sure that you're wondering why they would send me!

The reason is quite simple. I recently reported on the company's new car design studio in Detroit, where computers also play a major role. In fact, working with the latest virtual computer technology, the designers can now draw up a new concept vehicle and even test drive it, before actually producing a single nut and bolt.

This leap into the computer world has opened up many new opportunities and benefits in the automotive manufacturing process, and one of those is the health and welfare of the company's employees.

To find out more about this, I met with Allison Stephens who is an Ergonomics Technical Specialist at Ford. That might sound like quite the title for a representative of an automotive company, but trust me, this young lady understands more about work related aches and pains than most doctors I've ever met. However, unlike most medical practitioners, Allison manages to get her message across in a language that we can all understand.
