Who said alcohol and automobiles are not a good mix? In the upcoming weeks, a hundred Swiss customers will enjoy the benefits of driving a vehicle that runs on ethanol, a biomass-derived alcohol. The car will be Ford's Focus

FlexiFuel, in five-door sedan and wagon models. Over 22,500 units have already been sold in Sweden and this special Focus is about to make its entry in Switzerland.

80 percent less CO2
Motivated by a 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder Duratec engine that produces 125 horsepower, the Focus FlexiFuel can run on E85 fuel (85 percent ethanol, 15 percent gasoline) and on gasoline with a 95 octane rating. The car offers one important benefit in the battle to preserve the environment: when using E85 fuel, the engine produces 80 percent less carbon dioxide (CO2) than a comparable model that runs on gasoline. That's fantastic, since we know that CO2 fossil emissions are largely responsible for global warming!

At the moment, Ford says it can manufacture about 600 of these vehicles by the end of the year. In 2007, the automaker plans on producing 3,000 units.
