Walking down the halls of this year’s Montreal Auto Show, I’m getting the feeling that manufacturers are trying hard to give affordable sports cars another chance.

During my teenage years, the walls of my room were plastered with posters of the Eagle Talon, the Honda Prelude, the Mazda MX-6, the Nissan NX, the Subaru XT6, the Ford Probe and the Acura Integra. Every one of them is gone.

Fully loaded versions of these cars hovered around the $20,000 mark, which is about $30,000 in today’s dollars.

With two kids, it’s rather difficult to imagine myself buying a sports car as a daily driver, but I’m really excited to see the new models coming out.

Subaru and Toyota have teamed up to create a promising little number. The 200-hp 2013 Subaru BRZ and 2013 Scion FR-S are lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports cars that should deliver thrilling driving dynamics, and will arrive this summer at about $30K.

Hyundai’s new 2012 Veloster is a nifty little car; however, the 2013 Veloster Turbo that’s due next summer for about $26,000 will offer 201 hp. Let’s not forget the 2013 Genesis Coupe with its revised 4-cylinder turbo that now packs 274 hp, up from 210; it will start at about $27,000.

Over at Ford and GM, the V6-powered Mustangs and Camaros deliver more than 300 hp for well under $30K, while the Chrysler stand boasts the 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth, a tasty little number boasting a 160-hp, turbo 1.4L engine. It will cost about $25K.

Powerful, well-equipped, affordable and strikingly beautiful (OK, some are more cute than beautiful), these new models promise a lot for a reasonable amount of coin. Why settle for an ordinary car when you could get an entertaining one?
