Vehicle-to-vehicle communication to avoid accidents
The Nissan ASV-4 is designed to help reduce accidents by using advanced vehicle-to-vehicle communications. This system alerts the driver to take defensive actions in situations where an oncoming vehicle is not yet visible but poses a potential threat to road safety.
The only limitation, for now, comes from the fact that the ASV-4 is dependent on information received from vehicles that are equipped with Nissan's navigation system. Therefore, drivers must remain alert to other vehicles the system is unable to detect.
The preventive safety technology developed by Nissan addresses specific high-risk scenarios that account for approximately 60 percent of traffic accidents in Japan. The driver can both hear and see the warnings issued by the navigation system when a potentially dangerous situation has been identified.
The ASV-4 represents Phase 4 of a project launched in 1991 under the initiative of the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
In addition to the ASV-4, Nissan is also working on the ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) project involving a number of consumers. This system collects traffic data via links to traffic infrastructure. Another ongoing project uses telematics through cell phones to improve traffic flow.
